NYU Local’s Fall Playlist

It is cold outside and Mariah Carrey is thawing, but first let’s praise fall.

November has just started, and we would apologize for our tardiness, but an October with temps as high as 80 doesn’t count as fall in our books. Nonetheless, tis the season!

This fall, our playlist doesn’t just seek to evoke the calming nostalgia of November evenings in the second grade, it also speaks to the times. Cool breezes and overcast days call for time spent snuggled with loved ones, mittened fingers, and warm pumpkin spice lattes. The whole world could use a little warmth, and here are some songs we’ve found that in.

“Francesca” by Hozier

Starting off strong with the king of melancholic tunes, is Hozier’s ‘Francesca’, of his recently released album Unreal Unearth. With unmatched lyricism, this song is perfect for all of the die-hard lovers out there who would turn their backs on heaven’s door just for the chance to love that special someone again.

“Ever Since New York” by Harry Styles

The title alone should tell you everything you need to know about this song. Smooth guitar strumming and gentle vocals make this tune perfect for walking to class, or crying (quietly) through midterm preparation in Bobst.

“Kingston” by Faye Webster

What more can we say. Soft, gentle, soothing, perfect for when that midday fatigue rolls around and you can’t help but take a 3pm girl nap in the middle of your very important lecture.

“Sound and Color” by Alabama Shakes

Fall is the renewal season! Step into a new era, look outside your window, and see all things ‘beautiful and strange’, that are falling away like the leaves from the trees around us.

“The Thief in Marrakesh” by Arc De Soleil

Instrumentals have our heart. This is the perfect fall tune, its top 10 for day dreaming while strutting through the streets like a 70’s era detective on their way to bust some serious underground crimes.

“Crazy Love” by Van Morrison

Another shoutout to all the romantics out there. Let this song play on repeat on a chilly date under the city lights and we promise it’ll end in marriage.

“Le Manege” by November Ultra

Truly speaks for itself. Caution: ascension likely.

“Cold Shoulder” by Adele

Adele in her early days was truly a gift to this world that many are unfamiliar with. A year-round staple, if we’re being entirely honest.

“Is it Any Wonder?” by Durand Jones and the Indications, Aaron Frazer

Slow, nostalgic, and comforting. The fall season is meant for slowing down, resting, shedding old layers and donning the new. This song feels exactly like that act, getting familiar with yourself in a new season again.

“Sky Full of Song” by Florence + The Machine

Florence and the Machine always gets it right, no doubt about it. This is the type of song you put on while walking back to your dorm from an exam that knew you much better than you knew it.

“Solo” by Frank Ocean

Does anyone else feel the solitary nature of autumn? The partially intentional self-isolation from all things known and unknown, to spend time with yourself, just yourself? There’s something in the air for sure, and while we can’t quite put our finger on it, Frank Ocean certainly did.

“Back on 74” by Jungle

Ok yes, we heard this on TikTok. The choreography is out of this world, and so is this tune! Vibey, warm, and somehow the color orange, “Back on 74” is the perfect song to end this playlist on.
